The layers and masking guide covered the basics — hide, reveal, black and white. This one goes further into the masking tools that come up once you're working on more complex projects: clipping masks, vector masks, and refining tricky edges.
Quick Recap: Layer Masks
A layer mask hides or reveals part of a layer using black and white, painted freehand with a brush. It's flexible and intuitive, but it's not the only kind of mask Photoshop offers — and for certain jobs, the other types are genuinely better tools.
Clipping Masks: Using One Layer's Shape to Contain Another
A clipping mask uses the content of one layer to define the visible boundaries of the layer above it. Instead of painting a mask by hand, you're using an existing shape or text layer as the "container."
To create one: place your content layer (an image, a gradient, a texture) directly above the layer whose shape you want to use, then right-click the content layer and choose "Create Clipping Mask." The content now only shows up within the boundaries of the layer below it.
This is the tool behind effects like text filled with a photo, or a gradient contained inside a specific icon shape. The key difference from a regular layer mask: you're not painting freehand — you're borrowing an exact shape that already exists.

Vector Masks: Precision Over Freehand
A vector mask uses a path (drawn with the Pen tool or a shape tool) instead of painted black-and-white pixels. The advantage: vector masks stay perfectly crisp and scalable at any size, since they're based on mathematical paths rather than pixel data.
To add one: select your layer, then Layer > Vector Mask > Reveal All (or Hide All), then use the Pen tool to draw the shape defining what's visible. This is the right choice when you need geometrically precise edges — a logo, a badge shape, clean rectangular or curved crops — where a hand-painted mask would never look as clean.

Choosing Between Layer, Clipping, and Vector Masks
- Layer mask — freehand, flexible, best for photos and organic edges (hair, fur, natural shapes)
- Clipping mask — best when you already have a shape or text layer you want to "fill" with something else
- Vector mask — best for precise, geometric, scalable edges like logos or icons
Refining Difficult Edges: Select and Mask
Some subjects — hair, fur, semi-transparent fabric — are genuinely hard to mask cleanly with a plain brush. Photoshop's Select and Mask workspace (available whenever you have an active selection) has tools specifically built for this:
- Refine Edge Brush — paint along a fuzzy edge (like hair), and Photoshop automatically detects fine detail within that area
- Smooth, Feather, and Contrast sliders — fine-tune how soft or sharp the final mask edge is
- Decontaminate Colors — removes leftover color fringing from the old background that often lingers around hair or fuzzy edges

My honest advice: don't reach for Select and Mask on simple, clean-edged subjects — it's overkill and slower than a plain brush. Save it specifically for genuinely difficult edges where a regular mask keeps looking rough no matter how carefully you paint it.
Combining Mask Types in One Project
Real projects often use more than one type together — a vector mask to crop a photo into a precise circular badge shape, then a regular layer mask on top to fade one edge of that same photo. Masks stack and combine freely, so there's no rule against mixing approaches within a single layer group.
A Practice Exercise
Take a piece of text, clip a photo into it (clipping mask), then take a separate photo and mask it into a perfect circle using a vector mask (Ellipse tool + Vector Mask). Comparing how each mask type behaves on the same kind of content is the fastest way to build intuition for when to reach for which one.
